Well school has begun, and routines are starting up again. Energy abounds as students enter the school year with a fresh start. For many kids and families, the beginning of the school year is a time of great optimism. Underneath this optimism, however, can be the dread of what often follows once the school year is well underway…late assignments, forgotten homework, failed tests, an overwhelmed student, and a tense household. If you have a student who has trouble sticking to routines, and creating systems to stay organized, you may be living with someone who has ADHD or executive function deficits. This also comes out in other ways, such as difficulty regulating emotions and managing frustration. While many of these symptoms may be a recipe for disaster in the short term, there are many ways to help such students and one of them is through ExecutiveFunction Coaching.
What is executive function coaching? This is a relationship between a client and their coach where the client identifies areas that they would like to work on, where goals are set, and where a plan is set to achieve them. The coach and the student maintain ways to monitor accountability. This is often a lifeline for busy parents who want to put their energy into enjoying their teenager, rather than nagging and chasing after them.
As a former teacher and counsellor, I moved into coaching because it promotes independence, self confidence, and can truly help a student succeed. It is so rewarding to see a student flourish over the year and realize that they really are capable of achieving more. If a student you know could benefit from such a process, please reach out and we can arrange an initial free consultation…..
