Executive Function Coach and Learning Specialist
I am passionate about working with bright young people who need support to be successful in school.
Recently graduated from CSUN with a Masters in Educational Therapy, I bring 25 years experience as a teacher and therapist. I began my career as a teacher, teaching English, History, and Dance to underserved students in Toronto. As I became more skilled as a teacher, I also wanted to help my students individually with core issues that were blocking them from their potential. It was this desire that led me to a Masters in Social Work, followed by practicing individual and family therapy. Over time, my practice morphed into coaching adults with ADHD and this gradually led me to Special Education and back into working with children and youth.
Since moving to Los Angeles in 2014, I have been working exclusively as an Executive Function coach, while expanding my knowledge base in Special Education. This involves setting goals, and creating plans to achieve them. As coach, I offer accountability, social emotional support and reframing techniques which help them to move forward. With teens, this work is most often taught through their course content. I teach young people to set goals, manage their time, organize assignments, take good notes, and study effectively. As students become more proficient, their anxiety decreases, their confidence increases, and their grades improve.
In addition, I am trained in the Orton Gillingham approach to reading remediation, and enjoy working with students in need of intense, explicit, and systematic reading instruction.
Getting started begins with an assessment.
This involves filling out forms and discussing the student’s needs. Parent(s) are interviewed, and then the student. Over the next few sessions, I continue to informally assess the student to get a fuller picture of their strengths and skill deficits. This allows me to create learning goals which are shared with parents. Parents receive regular updates on how their student is working towards these learning goals.
Who?
I work with students, grades 3 to adult who are bright and capable but are having trouble staying on top of their work and benefit from academic and social emotional support. Sometimes they have ADHD, or dyslexia, or a different learning difficulty. Often, they are gifted students who also have a learning difficulty, twice exceptional. They may have strengths which mask their learning difficulties, or learning difficulties which mask their strengths.
I work with adults with ADHD who are brilliant but stuck. They have goals, but have trouble realizing them. They have great ideas but cannot get started. They get started but cannot finish. They are truly creative and bright but they often feel overwhelmed, and do not know where to start. It affects their work, and their relationships. They need a coach to support them, to help them prioritize, and to hold them accountable.
How?
I work in person with clients on the West Side of Los Angeles. I go to people’s homes or they come to my home office in Venice. I also see clients far and wide remotely. My ultimate goal is to equip students to become proficient and independent learners.
